MALACCA, Sat: It was a warm and cozy Saturday night as a lively bunch of young lawyers, together with a number of senior lawyers, gathered at Sampan Bistro in Malacca for the inaugural young lawyers event organised by the Malacca Protem Young Lawyers Committee (“MPYLC”). Our guest speaker was Edmund Bon, the Chair of the National Young Lawyers Committee (“NYLC”). The topic of the day was “How To Be An Outstanding Young Lawyer”.

About 70 participants witnessed this special occasion. Lawyers from Muar, Kuala Lumpur and even Singapore came for the event.

The guests started arriving at around 7.45 pm. Diner was served at 8.00 pm in the form of a buffet, with the food laid out in the garden which was lighted up by colourful lanterns. The guests were serenaded by live music while enjoying their meal.

After dinner, the guests were invited to proceed into the hall. Ng Kong Peng, the Chairman of the Malacca Bar Committee, gave a welcoming speech. He said he was very impressed with the turnout of the young lawyers and hoped that the formation of the MPYLC will be a platform for young lawyers to put in concentrated effort to contribute to the profession.

Cosmo Noodle Bar is a double-storey premise, with the upper floor suitable for group gathering functions. As suggested by the restaurant name, Cosmo Noodle Bar is mainly serving noodles of various cooking styles. The menu is kinda comprehensive, categorized into dishes of Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Vietnamese, Taiwanese, and Italian. Besides noodles, a lengthy list of snacks is also available.Seriously, if it wasn™t the signage of Cosmo Noodle Bar  , I would not have associated this pinkish shop as a dining place. The owner of this restaurant must be a freak for pink. However, I must admit that this bold design concept is an advantage to Cosmo Noodle Bar, or else it might not have attracted my attention, so do other new customers.

Malacca (Malay: Melaka, dubbed The Historic State or Negeri Bersejarah among locals) is the third smallest Malaysian state, after Perlis and Penang. It is located in the southern region of the Malay Peninsula, on the Straits of Malacca. It borders Negeri Sembilan to the north and the state of Johor to the south. The capital is Malacca City, which is 148 km south east to Malaysia capital city Kuala Lumpur, 235 km south east to Johor's largest city Johor Bahru and 95 km south east to Johor's second largest city Batu Pahat. This historical city centre has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 7 July 2008.
Although it was the location of one of the earliest Malay sultanates, the monarchy was abolished when the Portuguese conquered it in 1511. The Yang di-Pertua Negeri or Governor, rather than a Sultan, acts as the head of state now.

Following Ng Kong Peng’s speech was a performance by the Malaccan young lawyers. They put up a comical sketch entitled “What Young Lawyers REALLY Think About Their Bosses (“And Vice Versa”)”. Kiang Jau Sang was the 'star’ of the night as he bravely adorned a horse wig made out of a cleaning mop on his head. Everyone enjoyed the sketch and laughter reverberated across the hall.

Edmund Bon then gave an insightful talk on “How To Be An Outstanding Young Lawyer”. According to Edmund, leaders are not born. They are made. He said the present generation of young lawyers seems to lack the confidence to step out of their comfort zones and take on new challenges. He encouraged young lawyers to constantly challenge themselves and take personal responsibility in growing their legal skills and knowledge and not blame their employers for their lack of career progress.

Edmund also stressed that apart from focusing on our legal work, we should not neglect our social responsibilities as lawyers. Giving back to the society is an imperative for lawyers are we are statutorily bound by the Legal Profession Act to uphold law and justice. Constantly complaining of not having enough time to champion certain important causes is just an excuse as it reflects that young lawyers simply do not care about the cause that is at stake.

Before ending his speech, Edmund quoted a song entitled 'Its My Life’ by Bon Jovi. Just like the lyrics, young lawyers should not be just another face in the crowd, but let their voices be heard by all as they stand tall. We are not going to live forever, but while we are still breathing, let us try to be as outstanding as we can.

Many of the guests gave positive feedback on the event and said that the talk by Edmund Bon was inspiring. Some had hoped that Edmund would have given a longer speech as they really enjoyed listening to him.

Ng Kong Peng said he was impressed with the organization of the event and was entertained by the sketch and added that the event could be further improved if more senior lawyers were involved. This would allow the senior lawyers to appreciate the efforts of the young lawyer and thus narrow the gap between the more experienced members of the Bar and the younger lawyers.

Richard Wee, the Chairman of the Kuala Lumpur Young Lawyers Committee, said that the event was a testament of the quality of young lawyers in Malacca. Laura Liew, the Co- Chair of the Singapore Young Lawyers Committee, said she was glad to listen to the insightful thoughts of Edmund Bon.

Wong Fook Meng, the Chair of the Malacca Protem Young Lawyers Committee, said the organizing committee of the event, led by Thangaraj Marappan, had done a superb job in organizing the dinner talk.

And of course, we had to ask Edmund Bon himself on how the night went. He said it was an excellent function, the turnout was very encouraging and the sketch by the Malacca young lawyers was very brave.

Many of the guests stayed back to mingle and interact with one another. With full stomachs and refreshed minds, the guests left Sampan Bistro satisfied.

We trust that this historic event, being the first ever official young lawyers function in Malacca, is the genesis of a vibrant young lawyers movement in the Historical City of Malacca.

Sunshine Bar
Even though the gaudy red furnishings tend to be an eyesore, Sunshine Bar, a cosy open concept bar by the sea, has gained quite a fan base. Largely due to its free flow drinks for the ladies, this somewhat-hip tavern rakes in a crowd especially during the weekends.
